Goldilocks and one michevious Bear!

Well, we got a pet. I had promised Kaidence that if she would be brave for her immunizations on Wednesday that she could have a goldfish. She's been gearing up for the big day for a month now. Kaidence does not like to get shots (who does?). The difference though, between her and Chase is that she worries about it for weeks, works herself up into a panic, tries to talk herself out of it and asks a million questions beforehand like: what does it feel like? how long will the pain last? etc., etc. She can't decide which arm she wants it in or if she'd rather have it in her leg. Let me tell you...it is an ordeal and a workout holding onto her squirmy long legged body. Last time, I had the whole doctor's staff involved so that I could hold onto her, and after it was over she told the nurse how mean she was and flat out stated that she did not like doctors. (Kaidence does not cover up her feelings at all). :) Chase on the otherhand, willingly gets up on the table, looks the nurse in the eye and watches the needle go in and come out with out so much as a wiggle. Who knew these two could be so different. This is kind of off the subject, but a little funny and goes along with the "pain threshold" for Kaidence. A couple of weeks ago, Kaidence was looking through one of my pregnancy magazines and discovered how babies are born. She asked me if is hurts and ofcourse I said "yes", but told her that it was worth it. To say she was horrified, is an understatment. The look on her face was worth a thousand words. She could not believe any woman would go through that. She told me that she was never going to have a baby and wondered how she would ever become a mom. I told her she could adopt and that lots of mothers adopt their babies. The decision was pretty simple. Kaidence is going to adopt her babies someday. So back to our new pet. Kaidence did go through with getting her shots. I insisted Jonathan take her so he could have the experience of holding onto her. He described it by saying Kaidence panicked, practically hyperventilated and then went through with the whole thing. I don't think she screamed or yelled at the nurse so it was a success and Jonathan took Kaidence and Chase to the pet store to pick out "Goldilocks". Jonathan and the kids bought a gold fish bowl and all the accessories the day before. We had everything prepped and ready for our new pet. When Kaidence and Chase came home they were esctatic. Chase was holding the bag (that's probably where everything went wrong) the poor fish. We transplanted him/her into it's new setting and then watched. I kept thinking...what a boring fish, it doesn't want to swim around. Then I decided, it must be a little scared and probably bored by it's new surroundings and no one to play with. It ate a little food in the evening but still, not a very lively thing. I did catch Chase with his hand in the water. He said he was touching the plant. This morning, our little fish was still just hanging out at the bottom of the bowl. They do swim right? I know it was breathing and it wasn't floating but it just didn't seem right. I don't know if Chase was trying to help it out or what, but when he came up stairs with his sleaves wet, I knew Goldilocks was in trouble. "But I just wanted to help her swim" Chase confessed. After a few tears, I put "Goldilocks" in the toilet and told Chase that when he was ready he needed to flush it down (did I mention the piece of cereal floating in the bowl). Luckily Kaidence was at preschool when this all happened. As I cleaned out the bowl I debated what to do and what we had gotten ourselves into. Should I buy another goldfish before Kaidence got home?? Should I even get another fish? Maybe this would be a good lesson for the kids. I called Jonathan on my way to pick up Kaidence from school and we decided to give it one more try. So tonight, Jonathan will pick out another fish and bring it home. I have tried to impress three things into Chase's head: 1) We do not touch the fish. 2) We never put our hand in the bowl. 3) And...we do not hit the bowl or spin it around to wake up the fish. (Chase later confessed to "spinning the bowl around"). What do you think? Are we fish killers, or is there hope for our new pet?

There is definitely hope! I loved reading this story, and it was fun to hear it from Kaidence on the phone too:)

Your post made me laugh! You are so good with your descriptions! It's fun to read about your kids personalities!

Wishing you better luck with your new fish.

We had a gold fish that lived almost three years! I thought goldfish only live for a year max, and it was hard to keep the tank clean and it was a stinky fish :) Have fun with your new pet!
